So we are getting several requests for terminal performance data from Cutting Edge Bullets. Please post up your hunting results here so we have a data log. We will be adding our own data soon.

Impact velocity and a damage report would be great if you have it, along with caliber and bullet used.

Thank you
Jeff

We do have this video from Samantha of CEB taking her deer at 730 yards to start.

And we found this of a bull elk taken with a 252 gr CEB MTH in a 338.

I've taken a few deer, aoudad and a hog with the 260gr CEB Maximus in .458

Muzzle velocity is ~2000fps.

furthest shot was at 205 yards I recovered the bullet it peeled back much like a barnes TSX....I doubt a barnes would open up to .945" with a 1250-1300fps impact velocity CEB was intrigued to have heard what their bullet had done giving the lower velocity...The other shots were exactly as advertised. .458 hole going in then broke in to 4 blades with the base continuing through. It gave my 458 socom added authority that it didn't have when I was slinging the Barnes 300gr TTSX

Hopefully be able to add to this as well. Have 265gr lazers loaded in my edge with an avg mv of 3013 to try out starting next week.

That should be a great load and that is great velocity. The CEB's always seem to produce very good velocity. I think that is the bullet Daniel loaded in his 338 Terminator too.

Here is a report from John and Scott Armstrong I felt is very worthy of this thread.

"Another HUGE thanks to Cutting Edge Bullets. We went 3 for 3 on Bull Elk here in Nevada this year and two were long range strikes with Cutting Edge 275gr Lasers out of a Tim Smith built 338 Edge.

During the late hunt there were no big bulls to be found . We looked for a nice bull for two weeks and it seems that the good bulls had already moved out of our drawn area and to winter grounds. That being the case, Dad, John Armstrong, took this big bodied spike at 1,185 yards. He had 5 MOA of wind on the gun but the Laser hung tough. He center punched the front shoulders and the Cutting Edge Laser did the job. The bull took one step and laid down and was dead within seconds. These bullets work...PERIOD!

This was our second long range Cutting Edge Laser one shot bull this season with the first being on a 320+ royal at 1,306 yards. Thank you very much Cutting Edge for creating memories with family and friends, filliing freezers and doing it all humanely.

Thanks also for providing not only a great hunting bullet but also an absolutely awesome target bullet. We have the majority of our shooters in our Las Vegas Long Range Precision Varmint Silhouette match shooting these bullets with amazing success. Simply the best!"

Hi Franklin

can you tell me about your load and rifle please

I have a standard chamber Edge with 1/10 28.5” barrel, I am looking at the 265gr Lazer for my rifle for Sambar deer. Would like to know your experience with that bullet

cheers

I have shot 1 mule deer and a couple Aoudad with the 225 grain laser out of a 338 Norma at about 3,050 fps. The deer was a little over 250, and both Aoudad were in excess of 300, one was in excess of 400 Performance was devastating. I will try to shoot it a bit more this season and take some pictures, and video.

Doing the final drop tests today hopefully on mt new 338 Terminator with CEB 265 gr Lazers. It sends them at 3211 fps average and the barrel seems to really like them. Hoping to take some elk with them soon.

That is ok.
But I would like to know what I can expect for velocity and with what powder.
Thank You

Since the CEB Lazer is a bore rider design bullet, they often are a good bit faster than a traditional bullet of the same weight. I think H-1000 will be the ticket and 76 gr would be a place to start and work up. H4831 may also work or RL 26. But if it were mine I would be loading H-1000

We took an adult mule deer buck with the Cutting Edge .338 / 265 gr. Lazermax yesterday from my 338 Terminator. Buck was bedded slightly angled towards us 215 yards away. Bullet entered high near shoulder, traveled straight through the canter of the heaviest bone in the spine and exited high behind far shoulder.
Buck rolled over, instantly expired and never kicked or moved once.

Impact velocity was 2955 fps
Energy was 5138 lbs
TOF was .2 seconds

Entrance was pretty much caliber size with lots of bone fragments at the entrance hole.

20211027_122617.jpg

Exit was as expected from this relatively high velocity impact velocity. Slightly larger than entrance with indication of expansion of the bullet shank after the petals were dispersed.

20211027_122517.jpg

Internal damage to the spine and vertebrae was massive.

Jeff, can I ask why you went with the 265 over a 300 lead bullet. I get the 265cutting edge is a bore rider so do you feel the extra velocity is the advantage.
I've been looking real hard at these for my 300wm and my 338wm and now that terminal performance is showing up I'm looking even harder.

Yes, I felt the added velocity was a gain over the BC and I have been wanting more of my own personal data on terminal performance. It is the way these bullets fly that opened my eyes. The 400's in my 375 are amazing and it is no secret that Cutting Edge is winning the ELR events. I love the 300 gr lead core bullets too, but these are a very worthy option as far as I have seen.

Why did you choose the Lazar bullet over the MTH? After Hornaday's discovery on their tipped bullets, I am suspect of any tipped bullets that do not specifically state that the tip will not melt down.

I have used both Lazer and the MTH. I choose the Lazer for the better BC when barrel twist is not such a limiting factor. My 1:12 308 win uses the 150 MTH with great terminal performance. BC is okay relative to other monos but not great when compared to good lead core bullets.

I recall CEB address tip deformation specifically in a YouTube video somewhere. Basically it is not a problem for their bullets. This is evident by all their ELR success.

I have shot the lazers to over 6000 yards and won an ELR match with them. There is no issue with these bullets. I believe solid lathe turned copper bullets need a tip to initiate expansion. I believe the opposite for lead core bullets and a tip on a lead core will cause too much expansion at closer distances.

Today we took two Bull Elk at 550 yards with the 265 Cutting Edge Lazers from my DE 338 Terminator.

It appears to me these bullet performed exactly as they are suppose to. Both bulls were on the same mountain side about 20 yards apart. First bull was bedded and just rolled over and never stood up. Second bull stood up in his bed and dropped in his tracks. Never took a step. Both were shot in the crease behind the shoulder, exit was far shoulder. Good sized entrances inside the chest cavity, and exits were maybe 3/4". The bullets did fragment off petals, as they are suppose to, as we found small holes in the heart. Blood in the vital area in front of the diaphragm proves damage to oil pump and arteries. I didn't take wound channel pics, but I was pleased with damage to vitals. Very impressed with the fact they dropped right there and how quickly they expired.

Muzzle Velocity ... 3211 fps
Impact Velocity .. 2590 fps
Impact Energy ... 3947 lbs
Flight time .......... .57 seconds.

Pic is after we rolled them off the mountain to the 2 track below as we prepared to field dress them.

Bull #3 down with the Cutting Edge .338 265 gr Lazer from my .338 Terminator. In the crease behind the shoulder, out the base of the neck far side taking out part of the spine along the way. I recovered the bullet base in dirt and rock 10" deep in the mountain side. Bull rolled over in its bed. Kicked a few times and expired. I am getting pretty impressive results from these bullets. The recovered shank shows exactly what they are suppose to do after fragmenting off petals and this is what blasts on through.

Shot distance........... 594 yards.
Impact Velocity ....... 2543 fps
Energy ................... 3805
Flight time ................ .6 second

Recovered bullet weight 190.6 grains. 72% Retention

A friend took this nice Buck this am with my 338 Terminator and a another Cutting Edge 265 gr. Lazermax . Impact was a little low but the buck was down almost immediately and expired in a couple seconds. Complete pass through and I believe the petals did most of the internal damage to the heart as blood was pumping out as he fell.

Shot distance......... 175 yards.
Impact velocity ..... 3007 fps
Impact Energy ..... 5320 lbs.
Time of flight ........ .1 sec.

Curious if you ever get the opportunity to film any of these kills, especially for the terminal performance threads? You do a great job in explaining things, which we are thankful for!

Honestly, when I go into kill mode, it is very hard for me to think about a video and I don't have a camera man along often. Having a few of my hunts filmed now has made me realize how it changes a hunt, and what everyone involved goes through to get the footage.

I have a pretty good amount of sample data now. Not 100% conclusive for sure. But I do feel if you choose solids for your hunting bullet, there are things that need to be understood. One would be I think I would change my point of aim to solid shoulder bone. These bullets are made to punch through and keep going. They do shed petals, but this should not be confused or compared to a cup core lead / copper fragmenting bullet. The petals act different and there are less fragments. Just some food for thought after I have used these a little now. But for my solid copper needs, the Cutting Edge Lazermax is my choice by far.

Broz, could you describe a “behind the shoulder” shot you felt would have or could have been better with a Berger? How does the game react different. Do they take longer to expire? On their feet longer?

Living in a lead ban state, the Lazers are what I planned on switching too. BUT, I am a behind the shoulder shooter and try to save as much meat as possible.

@Broz, after taking down several elk and deer, I'm curious to know if you would reach for the .338 265 gr. Cutting Edge Lazer Max's now or the 300 gr Berger Elite Hunter or OTM?

I get what you mean, I’ve got a list of hunts that would have been cool on video…but in the moment it really isn’t all that important.

I have always said, choose your bullet for your needs, but know how they work best and use that info to put the odds in your favor.
Totally different designs and constructions work differently. While the fragments are much more from a cup core bullet I think they will kill best in the crease behind the shoulder and likely may not exit. But these Lazers are designed to destroy anything in it's way and I think will likely always exit. But with less fragments and a smaller wound channel. I think I liked their performance better when we took out bone with them. That is my opinion.

I will work up a load for the 300's now for this rifle. Then compare ballistics. They both have their place. I have always been a crease shooter with cup core bullets. I just need to step outside my box and try new designs. I don't really know that one will be a go to, but since I live in a state that allows lead I do like my cup core bullets too. But it sure is nice to know if I have a hunt where lead free bullets are all that we can use, we have a top shelf quality bullet to use as well.

Makes perfect sense. What kind of meat loss did you see on the shoulder shots with the Lazers?
