Curious to hear who is using this? What in? What is your load?

Curious as well. It looks to be somewhat bulky for a ball powder just looking at hodgdons load data. They list 81.1gr max as compressed in a 300win with a 208, compared to 78gr of h1000 being compressed. Close to the same pressures and velocity.

I'm interested as well. My buddy got 83 gr of Ramshot Magnum into a 300 WM with 208 ELDM, 2880 fps out of a Remington Long Range. I don't recall him saying it was compressed so yes, Hodgdon's load data is interesting.

Update: I just checked an old photo and it was 81 gr Ramshot Magnum.

They're also seating to sammi length specs, so pretty deep in the case.

I just picked some up to try yesterday.

I just picked some up yesterday at Scheels for $40.80/lb after a 15% discount to try on my .338 Thor. Hornady shows them for their 250-300 grainers for .338 RUM and LM, so why not.

I've got a message in to Hodgdon to see if they have any loads coming for the 300 WSM. Wondering if case fill / load density is going to work. I haven't got any of this powder to compare it yet. Any thoughts form folks that have loaded it?

The burn rate is close to Retumbo but more bulky. It most likley will not be a good powder for the WSM. The WSM needs less bulky powders for sure and generally works better with faster powders. H4350, H4831, RL23, RL26 are going to be best.

I've been searching a little on HD. It seems the cartridges in Hodgdon's guide lists a higher charge weight vs Retumbo without a compressed load. So I'm not sure if it really is more bulky. But surely is a slower burn rate.

Here's 30 Nosler. Screenshot_20230324-174427_Chrome.jpg

Also, as expected no such data for 300wsm but does list Staball 6.5 at impressive velocities.

I can do some measuring when I get mine. I did not mean to say bulky(volume per weight). I meant less energy per weight(will require more weight for the same velocity). In any case I will measure the volume per weight vs Retumbo when I get it.

I think that's what I was looking for when I said "bulky" above.

I picked up an 8lb jug last month but was waiting for my 7mm PRC barrel to show up which was just delivered today. Hoping to start load dev with it this weekend but haven’t committed to which bullet to start with.

It very well may be, or something real close. Someone just needs to see how temp stable it is! Hint hint
Being in E Idaho I can now test in above freezing temps this week but I think we’re going to need somebody in AZ to give some real data on that 😊

I’d be interested in seeing how this stuff plays out. Looks like a great magnum rifle option.

I just got 8 lbs. I have no intention of doing full load development. I am simply going to try to duplicate the factory 7prc load. I will do some temp sensitivity testing.

Thanks Ryan. Are you shooting a 24” barrel? I just shot my first factory box this morning and will load 20 rounds tonight of HD but have a 27.5” barrel and am trying to guess on my max w HD. Hodgdon says 69.2 g HD @ max but that’s for 24” and should be a little conservative for 24”. My battery died on my chronograph so I didn’t get mv today. Any thoughts?

I am running a 26" barrel but barrel length will have zero effect on max charge. If I am correct that this particular lot of ammo is Staball HD is over hodgdons book max.

So I went out with 69.5, 70.5, 71.5, and 72.5 grains with 210m primers with 180 ELDMs to compare to the factory(7 prc) load I believed to be Staball HD. At 72.5 grains I was getting 2980 fps which matches the factory loads velocity. This barrel is slower than my last but seems to be more consistently accurate. I believe this is a warm load with reloads as well as factory. No plunger marks but primers are starting to flatten.

Thanks Ryan. What kind of accuracy are you seeing with your factory loads and reloads?

In this Snowy Mountain Bartlein prefit two different lots of 180s and the 175s are averaging .5moa out to 600 which is the farthest I have been able to shoot.

I have not and don't plan on doing any real load development. If it keeps shooting like this I am just going to shoot factory ammo and reload duplicated loads if I can not get factory.

As far as 195 Berger’s Hodgdon lists HD as having the best velocity. I’m loading 180s but will try some 195s and some 190 a-tips shortly.

I loaded a box of once shot brass up all the way before I realized my bushing is MIA. Taken a couple of weeks but finally got one at Grafs. I’ll have results in next week I hope and will post.

I did some temp stability testing this morning. At 32 degrees the average velocity was 2975 and at 90 degrees it was 2965. The point of impact was unchanged at 811 yards. In the same conditions the RL25 in the factory 7 prc ammo changed 70 FPS.

Thanks Ryan. That’s promising with almost 60 degrees w only 10 ES between the two. My bushing is taking for ever on the 7 PRC so I might try a different load with the HD in the meantime… might try 300 PRC W ELD225s or even the 215 and play around with that a little this weekend. Maybe even try something with my 25SST and the 135 Berger’s. The more I here about HD the more I think I need to try it a bit as you can find it for $34/lb vs $60 right now for H1000 which is pretty ridiculous to me.

So I finally got started on load dev in 7mm PRC w 180 eld match, HD & 210ms.

Shots 21-40 on the barrel which is 27.5” so barrel hasn’t sped up yet… I figure at either 72.2 (3,086mv) or 72.5 (3,092mv) is where a 24” barrel would be hitting the advertised speed of factory ammo but again that’s before speed up so maybe that’s off a bit. Thanks for the tip on that @FURMAN.

I got a couple faint ejector marks @ 72.2 & 72.5 (one or two others at a full grain or more below these weights as well) but primers we’re just fine. Seems like all hornady brass does this to me so I’ve never worried about the ejector marks. I’ve got Peterson brass on order but who knows when it will ship though I really can’t wait for ADG later this year allegedly.

It also showed a promising node between 71.0, 71.3 and 71.6 w around 12 ES.

Any more load data and updates to testing this powder? Im considering purchasing some to compare to my h1000. thanks in advance.

I will try and get out over the Holidays. I haven’t done anything w the 7 PRC in several months. I have 8 lbs or most of that that I need to finalize a couple of loads on.

I just did a OCW load work up with some 180gr ELDM 2nds and Staball HD.

These are 0.020 off the lands in my Ridgeline FFT in 7PRC (22inch barrel). I didn't find pressure but did notice slight ejector marks at the 69gr. My rifle is prone to building a hard carbon ring at the end of the chamber and it wasn't freshly clean prior to starting. I cleaned it post work up. There is a good chance there is a higher node but I'm not chasing velocity with this work up.

Staball HD: 66-69 gr
Brass: Hornady
Bullet: Hornady ELDM 180gr (2nds)
Primer: WLRM
OAL: 3.348
Temp: 50
Wind: 10-15 nearly headon
Elevation: 7300

7PRC_12-30-2023.jpg7PRC_12-30-2023-2.jpg

I wasn't impressed with the velocity found but my rifle likes the 67gr load. My velocities ranged from 2691 to 2814 fps. The 67gr load has a velocity of 2723 fps.

Interesting thing is when I was having pressure trouble with factory Hornady Match ammo I reworked the factory rounds down to 69gr to save the brass. My velocity with 69gr reworked 180gr ELDM ammo was only 2752 fps. I don't think that the factory loaded ammo is pure Staball HD. I'm guessing that it is a proprietary mix of ball powder. It does look very similar.

Cheers,
Toby

Any chance anyone has tried StaBall HD in a big magnum like 300NMI? Will be using 230 Hybrids or 245 LRHTs.

Have a fresh Benchmark Carbon 8.5 twist.
