6mm Creedmoor Bullet for Whitetails

Do you guys have a preferred bullet from a 6CM for whitetails? I don't have any experience shooting animals with a 6mm yet. I know this is a long range forum, but I trust you guys and appreciate your expertise and experience. Most shots will be relatively short range to the respective distances my kids are confident/experienced shooting.

I am curious about this topic as well. I’m looking to use my 6 Creedmoor this year on deer just to clear up this issue a little bit. I personally am looking to shoot the 108 Berger or the 105 Hybrid. My typical load has been a 107 SMK (old style not tipped). So far I am not with impressed with match kings on game. They seem to be too violent. For my liking. I will definitely check the tips on my bullets to make sure that they are open, but I will not open them with a drill bit. Personally, I have been looking to try out hammer bullets or something similar. One 243 story stands out in our groups hunting past. it was a very close shot on an old buck where a bullet totally blew up on Contact. The deer only went 40 yds but there was zero blood. If the ranges are going to be close, then I would consider a very tough bullet. I look forward to gaining some real world personal experience with a 6 mm and hearing the opinions of those who have the experience.

I actually have a box of 88 gr Hammer Hunters in my loading room right now, but haven't worked up any loads for them since I got sidetracked this summer working on loads for my 300PRC. I spent a year or two on the monolithic school of thought, but have been going back to the rapid expansion massive wound channel of late. Some recent kills with target bullets and animals DRT are hard to ignore, but those were with 30 cal bullets and I don't know if the smaller dia bullets at faster terminal/impact speeds would be a bad combo.

I agree completely with how well bullets such as Bergers kill. I can’t get myself to quit them yet either. Although I would like to leave lead behind.

You should give your 88 Hammer Hunters a try I don’t think you will be disappointed. I have shot them in my 6 Rem ai and shoot very well. Not shot deer with them but the way they work on coyotes I think they will work fine on deer

Don’t worry about 105 bergers killing even fast and close. This coyote it went through and exited from 3000fps MV and 50 yards. I have the video also. Never felt a thing.

I shot my first deer with a 6 mm just a couple days ago. It was an 180lb. eight point Buck at about 125 yards broadside. 6 mm creed 3000 ft./s muzzle velocity, 108 Berger Target. Shot placement was right on the crease. Entry hole in the hide was caliber size but on the entrance side of the ribs, the hole was over golf ball size the bullet was under the hide on the offside with the exit hole through the rib cage, roughly the size of a dime, there was no blood trail. But the deer was dead in seconds traveling maybe 40 yards. If One was to inspect the rib cage without knowing shot direction. You would inaccurately assume that the entrance hole was the exit.

We shot the 95grain sst from Hornady out of a 243. Bullet hit a rib on entry and buried in the offside hide.

Thanks for the posts! My son shot a 3.5 year old (155 lbs after field dressed) the other day. Shot approx 2" behind the shoulder crease. Complete pass through. Great blood trail. Ran approx 30 yards and died.

I shot 2 does at 250 and 200 yards this summer doing crop control using a .243 launching 105gr Hottenstein Barnstormers at a mild 3000fps. Dropped the first one and the second ran like 20 yards. The first one was behind the shoulder, halfway up the body and left a golfball exit wound and destroyed the vitals. The second one was square in the shoulders and didn’t exit but I found the jacket under the offside hide. The guys I was hunting with couldn’t believe I used a .243 when they saw the damage when I was skinning and quartering them up. Ken Hottenstein is here in Michigan and only a couple hours from me and I like supporting him. He’s been making some great bullets.

Here’s the remains of the bullet I found after going through the shoulders of a mature whitetail doe at 200 yards. There’s also a picture of the cross section of the 105 Barnstormer (LEFT) next to a 108gr version of the same bullet. It has a nice big hollow cavity and works great. I’ve shot 2 groundhogs with them too, and it opened nice on them too.

108 ELD-M, I've seen several cow elk shot with them. They would be nasty on deer.

James this is kind of old but you asked for pic of 88 Hammer on coyote. 6ai at 3500 fps at 75 yards exit on left shoulder. Definatley not a pelt bullet but I don’t care
